Schweinsteiger shows stellar performance

Bastian Schweinsteiger is anything but quiet and shy. A wallflower, the 23-year old forward of FC Bayern München is not. His red card against Croatia led to a one-game suspension. So „Schweini“, as German fans love to call him, had to redeem himself in the crucial and much-anticipated quarterfinal against favoured Portugal in Basel on Thursday. Action speaks louder than words – and this time, „Schweini“ delivered.

He scored the first goal (22.) himself, and had assists for Miroslav Klose’s header (26.) and Michael Ballack’s goal (61.), to ensure a 3-2 win by the three-time European Champions Germany. The UEFA Technical Group honoured Schweinsteiger as the „Man of the Match“.

„I’m ecstatic that we were able to win this game. Now, we are in the top four. We have eliminated the best team of the tournament“, said Schweinsteiger. His excellent performance validated Joachim Löw’s decision to nominate Schweinsteiger following his suspension.

EURO 2008 - Germany celebrates

When the final whistle had blown, Portugal’s coach Luiz Felipe Scolari embraced and congratulated Schweinsteiger. In the game for third place back at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he had also shown a world-class effort, beating Scolari’s team almost single-handedly. Schweinsteiger then had scored all goals in Germany’s 3-1 win. He was just as good in Basel.
