Schweinsteiger overwhelmingly voted Man of the Match in final game

There could only be one winner. The friendly against Finland on Wednesday evening at Borussia-Park was captain Bastian Schweinsteiger’s farewell game, as the 32 year old played for the last time in the Germany shirt. In his 121st and final national team appearance, Schweini was named Man of the Match by the fans.

An overwhelming majority (81.7%) voted for the outgoing captain. Max Meyer, who impressed and scored his first international goal in only his second ever game for Die Mannschaft, came second with 8% of the votes. Mario Götze, who set up both of the goals, rounded off the top three with 2.6% of the votes.

This award honours Schweinsteiger’s performance but also serves as a last “thank you” from the fans. Basti has provided the fans with many unforgettable moments throughout his international career and has always been admired for giving his all, his sportsmanship and his character - on and off the pitch. In total, 6885 votes were cast and the Fan Club Nationalmannschaft powered by Coca-Cola and DFB.de thank everyone who took part.
