Schweinsteiger eyes 2014 return

The long period of suffering appears to be coming to an end for World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger. The 30-year-old midfielder will “possibly return to team training during the next international break” according to FC Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“It’s very likely that he will return in 2014,” added Rummenigge in an interview with kicker magazine. Bayern manager Pep Guardiola also recently implied that Schweinsteiger’s injury absence was coming to an end “shortly”. Schweinsteiger himself restrained from sounding too optimistic about an upcoming return to action: “It’s getting better and I’m trying to increase the intensity levels.”

Schweinsteiger’s last competitive appearance was in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil against Argentina, which featured a truly heroic performance from the new DFB-Team skipper. The Bayern vice captain returned to training with the ball just last week after a lengthy injury absence that stemmed from patellar tendon problems. Bayern’s club doctor, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, said that it has been a “great week for Bastian”, which further raises hopes for him to return to action in the near future.
