Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger continues to write history. The skipper came off the bench during Die Mannschaft’s victory over Italy in their EURO 2016 quarter final. The 31-year-old made his 17th appearance at the EUROs, three more than former DFB-Team captain Philipp Lahm (14), meaning he has now made the most appearances for Germany at European Championships.
Schweinsteiger, who doubled Germany’s lead in the 90th minute in their 2-0 win over Ukraine in the first group match of EURO 2016, is two appearances short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time record (19). Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon has also made 17 appearances in the competition.
