Schreck: "We must live up to our potential"

Sam Schreck is a technically diverse midfielder, currently playing at the U17 European Championships in Azerbaijan. In Germany's group game with the Ukraine he secured a point with his 2-2 equaliser - a well placed shot into the corner. On Saturday, manager Meikel Schönweitz’s team will face their biggest task yet in the form of a quarterfinal clash with Belgium - a true challenge.

"Our rhythm has improved on a daily basis throughout this tournament and we're now fully motivated ahead of the quarterfinal," said Schreck. "Belgium are very good in possession and they don't just park the bus. We must live up to our potential in order to secure a win." The players looked very focussed and full of determination during their final training session prior to this quarterfinal.

Schreck: "We want to keep a clean sheet"

"We want to be successful as a team," continued Schreck, who has made an appearance in two of Germany's three games so far this competition. All 18 players are fit at the moment and the team spirit is good. Schreck, who plays for FC St. Pauli, shares a room with Gian-Luca Itter of VfL Wolfsburg and the two U17 internationals get along fantastically.

"I always try to set up my team mates so they can have an attempt on target," explained Schreck when asked about his approach to the game. He assisted six goals this season for his club and provides the creative element to Germany's U17.

Germany have scored at least two goals in each game so far at the European Championships and recently kept a clean sheet against Austria in a 4-0 triumph. Schreck is fully aware of what's required in order to prevail against Belgium: "We want to keep a clean sheet, because in attack we are always capable of scoring a goal."

Schreck himself has dedicated himself fully to the team’s efforts. The European Championship is a real highlight in his career and he wants it to keep going for as long as possible. The 17-year-old will start a new adventure in July, when he will link up with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Schreck will be looking to take the next step in his career at the Bundesliga side - preferably with plenty more winning memories from the 2016 U17 European Championship.
