Schalke: World Champion Draxler undergoes operation

World Champion Julian Draxler, from Bundesliga club Schalke 04, underwent an operation on his semimembranosus muscle in his right ankle on Tuesday evening. Manager Roberto Di Matteo confirmed this during a press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon (20:45 CET): “I hope that everything goes well and he recovers as quickly as possible,” said the Italian.

Draxler picked up the injury after only eleven seconds of last Friday’s Bundesliga game against FC Augsburg. The 21-year-old will be out until at least the winter break. “He’s a huge loss,” said Di Matteo. “There aren’t many talents like him in the world. He won’t be easy to replace.”

Including Draxler, the Schalke manager will be without seven players due to injury at the Estadio José Alvalade. It’s also unknown as to whether both Kevin-Prince Boateng (ankle) and Sidney Sam (muscle problem) will be available. “Kevin is an important player that brings a lot to the team,” explained Di Matteo. “We’ll have to wait until after the final training session.”
