Schalke score three in six minutes to beat Gladbach

Schalke 04 have won their first Bundesliga match of the season after scoring three goals in six minutes to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-0. Hamburger SV have taken their place at the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

Schalke 04 looked confident after their 3-1 victory over RB Salzburg in the Europa League on Thursday night. The Royal-Blues had a lot of possession in midfield but couldn’t quite convert their chances into goals. Alessandro Schöpf had a chance to open the scoring in the 12th minute but his shot was no trouble for Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer. Borussia Mönchengladbach were on the back foot and were waiting for Schalke to make mistakes. Their only dangerous attack on goal was through Yannik Vestergaard in the 41st minute but his header was cleared off the line by Schöpf.

Schalke took the lead at the beginning of the second half when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored a penalty in the 52nd minute. Four minutes later, record signing Breel Embolo scored his first goal for Schalke. Just two minutes later Leon Goretzka put the hosts 3-0 in the lead. Markus Weinzierl’s team scored more goals in this short space of time than they did in their first five fixtures combined. Embolo then scored his second just before the end of the game to make it 4-0 to Schalke.
