Schalke draw in Munich, Wolfsburg can't capitalise

FC Bayern München are still looking for their first win of 2014. After losing 4-1 to VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 18, they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to a plucky Schalke 04 side. They remain eight points clear of the Wolves, who drew 2-2 in Frankfurt. Borussia Mönchengladbach consolidated third place thanks to a 1-0 victory over SC Freiburg. The night’s other game saw Hannover 96 and FSV Mainz 05 play out a 1-1 draw.

Table toppers Bayern were reduced to ten men in the Allianz Arena after 17 minutes. Jerome Boateng brought down Sidney Sam in the box and received his marching orders. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s penalty was comfortably saved by Manuel Neuer. The numerical disadvantage didn’t prove to hinder the Bavarian side, who went in front with 23 minutes left to play through Arjen Robben’s header. The Royal Blues equalised soon after through Benedikt Höwedes’ powerful header, which rescued a point for the side from Gelsenkirchen.

Wolfsburg can’t take advantage

The Wolves were unable to make the most of Bayern’s slip-up in Frankfurt. Both teams cancelled each other out in the Commerzbank-Arena, however, Stefan Aigner fired past Diego Benaglio to put the hosts in front shortly before the hour mark. Wolfsburg salvaged a point with just two minutes left on the clock through Kevin de Bruyne.

Mönchengladbach remain hot on their heels thanks to a 1-0 victory over SC Freiburg at Borussia-Park. Patrick Herrmann, who grabbed the deciding goal on Saturday against Stuttgart, proved to be the match winner once against for the Fohlenelf. His 22nd minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Hannover were unable to make a push for the Europa League spots. The Lower Saxony side took the lead after 26 minutes through Jimmy Briand. Germany U21 international Johannes Geis almost equalised for the guests less than minutes into the second half, but his long range free kick hit the post and rebounded to safety. However, the guests did rescue a point thanks to Elkin Soto’s effort (77’).
