Sami Khedira’s goals spark German U 21-team to 6-0 win

The German Under 21 defeated Luxembourg 6-0 (1-0) in a qualifying game for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden (June 15-29, 2009). Stuttgart’s Sami Khedira scored three goals (28., 46., 58.) in a lopsided contest played in Wiesbaden in front of 7,000 fans, while Mesut Özil (50.), Rouwen Hennings (54.) and Baris Özbek (85.) scored the remaining goals for the DFB-team.

Because of the convincing win, Germany surpassed Northern Ireland and take the lead in the EURO qualifying group 1. The team of Dieter Eilts has totalled 13 points in five games.

Germany secured the win based on a strong performance in the second half, but needed some warm-up time before breaking apart Luxembourg’s defensive bulwark. Khedira converted on the game’s first mentionable scoring opportunity, when almost half an hour had already been played.

The pace accelerated following halftime. Khedira’s goal just seconds after the second-half kickoff enthused his teammates. Within seven minutes, Özil and Hennings scored to increase the lead to a comfortable 4-0.

“We certainly had expected a win, but Luxembourg’s defensive tactics initially gave us some problems. My players showed what they are made off in the second half”, said Eilts. “I feel good for Sami, as he had his setbacks in the past few months.” Germany will next face Moldawia in a EURO-qualifier in Tiraspol (August 19).
