Rüdiger makes return to starting eleven

Germany international Antonio Rüdiger made an impressive return to the AS Roma starting line-up five months after sustaining a cruciate ligament injury in a training session with the national side. On matchday 11, Roma were held to a 0-0 draw by FC Empoli. Rüdiger played as left back and put in an accomplished performance.

Coach Luciano Spalletti appeared pleased with his defender’s performance, before replacing him in the 68th minute. Roma struggled to get going from an attacking viewpoint in Empoli, with El Shaarawy squandering their best two opportunities. After Rüdiger was taken off, Empoli also started to create decent opportunities and they had the chance to secure the win.

Roma remain Juventus’ nearest challengers in Serie A, trailing Sami Khedira’s side by four points.
