Reus leader of the pack

If there's anything that footballers know a thing or two about, it's football, so it does make sense to listen to professional footballers' verdicts on their colleagues' performance. German magazine kicker does that twice a year – in the winter after the first half of a season, and in the summer once the season is over. Players are asked to answer a list of questions on various issues. From the total of 228 responses evaluated, Mönchengladbach and German national team player Marco Reus clearly emerges as "Best Field Player" at the time of the 2011/12 winter break. From all of the Bundesliga clubs' men between the posts, Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern and Germany) was voted "Best Goalkeeper."

While Nuri Sahin (Real Madrid and Turkey) had last won two consecutive editions of the poll, this is a first for Reus who received 35.7% of the votes, leaving the runner-up place to Dortmund and Germany player Mario Götze (12.7%), with Franck Ribéry (FC Bayern and France) coming a close third (12.2%) and Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mario Gomez and Toni Kroos (all FC Bayern and Germany) completing the field.

Neuer won "Best Goalkeeper" accolades on three previous occasions – in summer 2010, in winter 2010/11, and in summer 2011. This time, he received 27.7% of the votes, ahead of Bernd Leno (Leverkusen, 20.5%) and Marc ter Stegen (Mönchengladbach, 18.6%), both of whom have been regulars with German under-age national teams for several years now.
