Regionalliga side Walldorf cause shock against Bochum

2. Bundesliga side VfL Bochum have suffered one of the biggest upsets of the DFB Cup first round. Last season’s quarterfinalists were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Regionalliga side FC Astoria Walldorf. Nicolai Groß, Marcel Carl, Marcus Meyer and Steffen Straub fired the underdogs to an historic win, while Marco Stiepermann and Kevin Stöger (2) found the net for Bochum.

3000 fans witnessed the hosts take an early lead after a goalkeeping blunder by Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann, who had rushed out of his box to make a clearance, but was beaten to the ball and rounded by Groß for a simple tap-in. Stiepermann equalised for Bochum to keep things level going into the break.

The second division side applied more pressure in the second half, but were able to find a second goal. Carl re-established Walldorf’s lead with a stunning long-range effort, before Bochum once again equalised ten minutes later.

The minnows seized control in second half, taking a two-goal lead through Meyer and Staub, before Stöger pulled a consolation goal back for Bochum.
