Real celebrate record victory, Schweinsteiger comes on for Manchester United

Champions League winners Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of the table on Saturday with a 5-0 win against FC Granada. Toni Kroos featured in the starting eleven and Real Madrid now have 40 points, a six-point advantage over FC Barcelona. Barcelona and Marc-André ter Stegen can chase Madrid with a win on Sunday against FC Villarreal.

Real Madrid are now unbeaten in 39 times, equalising a record previously held by Barcelona. Madrid’s last loss came on 6th April 2016 against VfL Wolfsburg in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

Spain international Isco scored a brace (12’, 31’), whilst Karim Benzema (20’), Cristiano Ronaldo (27’) and Casemiro (58’) all got their names on the scoresheet. Kroos was replaced at half-time by James Rodriguez.

Schweinsteiger makes first appearance since November

Manchester United have reached the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win against Reading FC. Former Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger came on in the 78th minute to make his first appearance since 30th November 2016 in the 4-1 win over West Ham United. Wayne Rooney (7’), Anthony Martial (15’) and Marcus Rashford (75’, 79’) scored the goals.

Manchester City secured their place in the next round on Friday with a 5-0 win away at West Ham United. Ilkay Gündogan and Leroy Sané did not feature due to injury.

Arsenal and Leicester qualify for the next round

World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi started for Arsenal in their 2-1 win against Preston North End. Olivier Giroud scored the winner in the 89th minute to secure Arsenal’s place in the fourth round of the competition. Mesut Özil did not feature in the squad.

Leicester City have also qualified for the fourth round of the competition with a 2-1 win against league rivals Everton FC. Everton took the lead through Romelu Lukaku in the 63rd minute, before Ahmed Musa (66’, 71’) scored twice to secure the win for Leicester. World Cup winter Ron-Robert Zieler was an unused substitute.
