Quarter-final facts: Top match in Frankfurt

For eight teams, the first half of the season isn’t quite over. This weekend the quarter-finals of the DFB Women’s Cup take place. The final in Köln is getting closer – two wins and you’re there. DFB.de previews the action here.

Participants: Two second division sides are in the quarter-finals: 1. FC Köln and FSV Gütersloh. 1. FFC Frankfurt, VfL Wolfsburg and Bayern München have won the last three tournaments between them and have also qualified. SC Sand Turbine Potsdam and SC Freiburg complete the draw. Matches: The action starts on Saturday (14:00 CET) when VfL Wolfsburg play SC Sand. In the second match of the day, 1. FC Köln hope to upset Turbine Potsdam. That game starts at 15:00 CET. ON Sunday SC Freiburg face FSV Gütersloh at 11:00 CET; Frankfurt host FC Bayern München at 12:00 CET.

Revenge: Frankfurt will be hoping to gain revenge upon Bayern. In 2012 the teams faced each other in the final and Bayern came out on top thanks to goals from Sarah Hagen and Ivana Rudelic, which gave Bayern their only win in the Cup to date. The teams met in the Bundesliga recently: On 7th December Bayern beat Frankfurt 2-1.

Outsiders: On paper the roles are clear. VfL Wolfsburg have picked up five titles in the past two years and currently top the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga. They face SC Sand who were promoted into the Bundesliga for the first time this year. Last season they qualified for the semi-final of the competition. This year the team from Baden-Württemberg are 10th in the table and are fighting relegation.

The meetings between 1. FC Köln & Turbine Potsdam and SC Freiburg & FSV Gütersloh are Bundesliga against second-division clashes. Potsdam last won the trophy in 2006 and will be hoping to get back to winning ways. “Potsdam are a top team,” said Köln manager Willi Breuer. “We go into the game as outsiders but there’s still a chance.”

SC Freiburg reached the semi-final last season but lost to Essen after extra time. They want to go at least one step better this season and will need to beat second-division FSV Gütersloh to qualify.

The Final: The final takes place in the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne on 1st May 2015.
