Parting President Zwanziger awarded with state medal

Dr. Theo Zwanziger was decorated with the “Großes Bundesverdienstkreuz” medal when he stepped down as President of the German Football Association on Friday. Hans-Peter Friedrich, Germany’s minister of the interior, conducted the ceremony, which came as the concluding act of the extraordinary DFB assembly in Frankfurt.

“Theo Zwanziger represents this holistic and integrated approach, that has become such a trademark of the DFB”, said Friedrich during his laudation. “Under his reign and with his emphasis on the social aspects of the game, the DFB has transcended its role as a football association and has grown into a vibrant part of our German culture and society. For his dedication, the German government awards him with this medal.”

Zwanziger, who had received the “Bundesverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse” in 2005, responded: “This is a special honor and serves as a beautiful closure to my tenure as DFB-President.”
