Opening match defeat for Germany’s U20s

Germany’s U20 national team started the World Cup in South Korea with a 2-0 defeat to Venezuela. Coach Guido Streichsbier side conceded both goals shortly after the break from Ronaldo Pena and Sergio Cordova in front of 5,449 spectators. In the other Group B game, Mexico secured a 3-2 win over Vanuatu.

Streichsbier later commented on the first game at the World Cup: “I knew that we would need some time to get into the game, after we had a relatively short preparation period together. We played solid in defence at the start of the game. After 30 minutes, we had the match under control. In the second half we wanted to be more active in attack, but slept through the opening ten minutes. After that we unfortunately lacked the fitness to launch a comeback.”

Even first half

The DFB Team, playing their first international match on Korean soil in the Daejeon World Cup Stadium, convinced in the opening minutes by winning many tackles, but neither Germany nor Venezuela managed to create any early chances. Suat Serdar’s shot from range after eleven minutes was the first attempt on target by Streichbier’s side.

Many set-pieces meant that there was no real flow to the first half. After 30 minutes, the South Americans found a way through on the right wing, with Ronaldo Pena recording the best chance of the game so far. Just before, Ronald Hernandez forced a save from Borussia Dortmund keeper Dominik Reimann.

Quickfire double after the break

The DFB team responded with Wolfsburg’s Amara Conde firing just wide from the edge of the area. Philipp Ochs twice attempted to break the deadlock from range before half-time. Germany looked to be in control of the game at this point.

However, they weren’t able to carry the momentum into the second half and Pena slotted home five minutes after the restart. Four minutes later Cordova doubled Venezuela’s lead. Germany attempted a late charge for the comeback, but their best chance was yet another shot from range by Maximilian Mittelstädt with ten minutes to play.

On Tuesday, the U20 DFB Team faces Mexico in their second group game, before the conclusion of their group stage on Friday against Vanuatu.
