Özil on target in Arsenal victory over Liverpool, Can sent off

World Champion Mesut Özil scored a stunning free kick goal during FC Arsenal's 4-1 home victory over Liverpool in the Premier League. The former Bremen and Schalke player put Arsenal two goals ahead in the 40th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Liverpool's Germany U21 international, Emre Can, was sent off in the closing stages of the game following a second bookable offense.

Hector Bellerin (37') had given the hosts a lead, with Alexis Sanchez (45') and Olivier Giroud (90+1') and Liverpool's Jordan Henderson (77' pen) completing the scoring.

Liverpool started the better but squandered their opportunities. Arsenal, with Per Mertesacker also in the starting XI, controlled the game after taking the lead but were pushed until the final whistle as Liverpool continued to push forward.

The victory lifts Arsenal into second place with 63 points, trailing table toppers Chelsea (67 points) by four points. The Blues will be in action later on Saturday against Stoke City. Manchester City (61 points) travel to Crystal Palace on Monday.
