Özil guides Arsenal to emphatic victory

World Cup winners Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker continue to stay on course for a Champions League spot with Arsenal. Özil led the Gunners to a comfortable 5-0 win against Aston Villa in the Premier League with a goal and assist. The North London side lie in fifth place, just a point behind third, which qualifies automatically for the Champions League, after picking up their third successive win.

Özil set up Olivier Giroud’s first goal before scoring the second after half time. Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla (pen) and Hector Bellerin made sure of the win late on. Özil and Mertesacker both played the full 90 minutes.

Podolski loses with Inter

The transfer of Lukas Podolski has not paid off for 18-times Italian Champions Inter Milan yet. They lost 3-1 to Sassuolo in a feisty encounter on matchday 21 of Serie A that saw two sending offs. Inter drop into mid-table after their second loss in a row.

Podolski, on loan from Arsenal, started for Inter, who have now picked up just one point from their last three league outings. The 29-year-old was subbed off in the 56th minute by Roberto Mancini.

Despite Icardi netting late on, he was unable to change the fortunes of Inter after conceding goals from Simone Zaza, Nicola Sansone and Domenico Berardi (pen). Goalscorer Sansone saw red late on after picking up a second yellow with Isaac Donkor shown a second yellow shortly after following a foul. Berardi converted the resulting penalty.
