Özil and Mertesacker on course for Champions League

Arsenal remain on course for a Champions League place. Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil were in the starting line-up as they won 2-1 away to Crystal Palace and climbed into third in the process. Santi Cazorla put them in front from the spot after eight minutes and Oliver Giroud doubled the lead shortly before the break. Glen Murray pulled one pack for the Eagles in injury time.

Chelsea still top the table but they dropped two points at home. Mourinho’s side drew 1-1 with Burnley. Branislav Ivanovic put them in front after 14 minutes; Ben Mee equalised with nine minutes left on the clock. Manchester City could narrow the gap to five points if they beat Newcastle United (18:30 CET).

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Swansea yet remain fourth. However, Southampton could overtake United and Arsenal tomorrow. Ander Herrera (28’) had put the Red Devils in front but goals from Sung-Yueng Ki (30’) and Jonjo Shelvey (73’) won the game for the Welsh side.

Setback for Barca and ter Stegen

Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s Barcelona side suffered a setback in their quest for the Spanish title. Malaga inflicted a rare home defeat on Barca; Juanmi scored the winner after just seven minutes. The Germany goalkeeper was an unused substitute. Real Madrid would go four points clear with victory over Elche tomorrow. Barcelona face Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.
