Nine goal classic in Leipzig

Bundesliga matchday 33 produced one of the most memorable games of the season, with champions FC Bayern München claiming a 5-4 victory against RB Leipzig. The race for third place is still open, after TSG 1899 Hoffenheim earned a 5-3 win at SV Werder Bremen, to join Borussia Dortmund level on points in third, after the DFB Cup finalists were held to a 1-1 draw at FC Augsburg. Despite the point, Augsburg still find themselves in relegation danger, while Bayer Leverkusen all but secured their place in next year’s Bundesliga season, coming back to claim a 2-2 draw in the Rhein Derby with 1. FC Köln.

FC Ingolstadt have become the second side to face relegation this season, following a 1-1 draw at SC Freiburg. Hamburger SV still occupy the relegation play-off spot after a 1-1 draw at FC Schalke 04. FSV Mainz 05 turned a two-goal deficit into a 4-2 win against Eintracht Frankfurt and now hold a two-point lead over HSV. VfL Wolfsburg are also two points ahead of Hamburg, after earning a 1-1 draw at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Hertha BSC also won importantly 2-0 at already relegated SV Darmstadt 98 in the race for Europe.

Leipzig and Bayern produce classic

The action in Leipzig was fast-paced right from the start. The hosts took the lead after just 65 seconds when Marcel Sabitzer headed home a cross from Emil Forsberg. Bayern were level again after Robert Lewandowski’s 150th Bundesliga goal. The Pole converted a penalty in the 17th minute. Germany international Timo Werner followed suit from the penalty spot, after Xabi Alonso brought down Forsberg. Just after the break, Leipzig took a 3-1 lead through Yussuf Poulsen’s deflected shot. Thiago Alcantara’s header on the hour-mark made it 3-2, but again Werner found the target to restore Leipzig’s two-goal advantage. Lewandowski’s 30th goal of the season made it 4-3 for Leipzig, but it proved to be the turning point, as David Alaba’s direct free-kick goal and Arjen Robben’s solo-run in stoppage time saw Bayern complete an unbelievable late comeback.

Hoffenheim were quick to set the tone in Bremen, as goals from Adam Szalai and Andrej Kramaric gave them a 2-0 lead eleven minutes after kick-off. Steven Zuber, Kramaric again and Ermin Bicakcic were on target to make the score 5-0 just 52 minutes into the game. Bremen fought back, but goals from Gebre Selassie, Philipp Bargfrede and Robert Bauer were not enough to cause the second unlikely comeback of the day.

Leverkusen recover from two-goal deficit

Dortmund only hold third place over Hoffenheim due to their goal difference. Alfred Finnbogason gave Augsburg the lead against BVB, but Tuchel’s men were able to rely on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with his 29th strike of the season to earn them at least a point.

Köln took a two-goal lead in Leverkusen after goals from Milos Jojic and Lukas Klünter. Stefan Kießling restored hope for the hosts on the hour mark and Joel Pohjanpalo added the equaliser after 71 minutes to earn Leverkusen a crucial point in the battle again relegation.

Ingolstadt relegated after draw

Germany U21 international Maximilian Philipp gave Freiburg the lead at home against Ingolstadt, but the now-relegated side showed fight and equalised before the break through Dario Lezcano. Freiburg are still in sixth place and would qualify for the Europa League despite not taking all the points.

HSV remain in the relegation play-off spot after a 1-1 draw with Schalke. Guido Burgstaller’s first-half goal gave the hosts the lead. However, Hamburg can still avoid the relegation play-off with a victory on the final matchday, after Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored two minutes into stoppage time to salvage a draw.

Mainz manage comeback against Frankfurt

Frankfurt looked to be on the road to victory after goals from Branimir Hrgota and Haris Seferovic gave them a 2-0 lead after 50 minutes, but Mainz recovered in impressive fashion. Jhon Cordoba’s goal on the hour-mark got them back into the encounter and Stefan Bell’s equaliser two minutes later stunned the visitors. Yoshinori Muto’s strike after 76 minutes gave Mainz the lead, which Pablo de Blasis doubled in stoppage time from the penalty spot.

Germany international Mario Gomez scored an equaliser (1-1) for Wolfsburg, which could give them a decisive advantage over HSV on the final matchday. Jannik Vestergaard had given Gladbach the advantage in the first half, before Gomez fired back midway through the second. After 79 minutes, referee Christian Dingert ordered both teams into the changing rooms, as a thunderstorm caused a 30-minute delay.

Hertha BSC are in great position to secure a spot in next season’s Europa League. Salomon Kalou and Germany U20 international Jordan Torunarigha were on target to earn a 2-0 victory at already-relegated Darmstadt.
