Niersbach:"There's no other alternative" but to play the 2022 World Cup in winter

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar should take place in November/December is what a FIFA taskforce, consisting of representatives from the world governing body, the continental governing bodies and the most important leagues and clubs, has recommended after a meeting in Doha on Tuesday. The final decision will be made in March of this year by FIFA’s Executive Committee.

“There is a solution- November/December,” said FIFA’s General Secretary Jérôme Valcke. The world governing body said in a statement that “the proposal has the support of all six continental governing bodies.” The proposal of the taskforce is that there is the possibility that “the tournament could be shortened. However, the final timing of the tournament is still yet to be decided.”

DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach said: “It’s hard to imagine a World Cup final taking place just before Christmas. But the tournament can’t be played during the summer due to the heat and therefore there’s no alternative but to play in winter. The organisers will now have to find the best possible solution, which won’t be easy but it’s also not impossible.”
