Niersbach candidate for FIFA Executive Committee

Wolfgang Niersbach has been put forward as a candidate for the Executive Committee of the World Football Association FIFA. The President of the German Football Association (DFB) is following the wish and the unanimous vote of the Presidential Board, who put Niersbach forward as a candidate at a meeting in Weimar. The DFB has put him forward in place of Dr. Theo Zwanziger, who will step down at the FIFA Congress on 29th May 2015 in Zurich. The European FIFA Executive representative will be chosen at the UEFA Congress in Vienna on 24th March 2015.

DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach said: “I’ve never made a secret of the fact that I have enough work to do with the DFB and UEFA, without taking on this role. But I appreciate the unanimous vote and the trust of professional and amateur football a lot. I’m making this decision because I would like to hold one of the European positions and I have the firm belief that German football should not lose its place and its voice among the most important decision-making bodies. I see it as a great joint task to represent the interests of our associations, leagues and clubs in world football.”

Koch: “Niersbach is the ideal candidate”

League President Dr. Reinhard Rauball declared: “It’s vital that the biggest association in the world is represented by its President on the FIFA Executive Committee, especially in tough times like this. Wolfgang Niersbach is the right man to bring about transparency and a solution. He has internationall connections and has the full trust of the whole of German football. In this respect, the league association fully backs Wolfgang Niersbach as a candidate. We are grateful that he is available and give him our full support in this by no means easy task.”

Dr. Rainer Koch, Amateur Vice President, said: “The Presidents of the regional and national associations said that Wolfgang Niersbach was their ideal candidate at their conference. He’s not only got international connections and internationally respected, but he will also take into account amateur football along with the top level of football. We don’t see a better candidate for the position and are 100% behind his nomination.”
