Nicole Anyomi: Aiming for the title

Nicole Anyomi changed the game with her brace of goals in the 41st and 53rd minutes of the match against U17 European Championship hosts, Czech Republic. The SGS Essen attacker has already scored three goals in her eight matches in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga and now she wants to fire the U17 Germany team to glory at the Euros.

“I was very pleased with my goals,” said Anyomi on the day after the victory. “We didn’t really find our way into the match at the start. I missed two chances and then we conceded. My goals helped the team and gave us security.” The girls had gone in 1-0 down at half-time, but Anyomi’s goals helped the German juniors win the match 5-1 and book their place in the semi-final as group winners. Anouschka Bernhard’s team are set to play Norway on Thursday (18:00 CEST).

“Mood around the team is good”

The girls will carry out a recovery session involving either cycling or jogging tomorrow. “The mood around the team is good,” said Anyomi, who enjoys drawing in her spare time. “But now we need to re-gain our energy and concentrate on the semi-final.

The U17s don’t just want to support their efforts with goals, but they will also call on their experience of playing in the Bundesliga. “I’ve gained al lot from playing in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga, for example, what helps a team mentally and what motivates a team. I’m trying to transfer this experience to here and now,” said Anyomi.

“Give everything against Norway”

The objective is clear: „We need to give everything again against Norway, like we did in our opening match against Spain. We were right at it from the start in that match,” said Anyomi. “We can still work on our build-up play. We play better when we’re calmer on the ball and make the most of our opportunities to score. If we take an early lead then it will be more difficult for our opponent to play their game. Then we can utilise our strengths such as pace and dynamism.”

Family is watching on TV: “More motivated than usual”

Anyomi’s parents and younger brother are following the matches on the TV. “Last time I was quite tense because our game against the Czech Republic was shown live on Eurosport,” revealed Anyomi. “But at kick-off the tenseness went away. I gave everything and was more motivated than normal because I knew that my family was watching.”

The Anyomi family will be watching (live on Eurosport) when the Germany U17s take on Norway in the semi-final of the European Championship.
