Newly formed U21s want to “make the right decisions”

14 debutants, two new captains and a total of ten substitutions all took place within the space of 90 minutes during Germany U21s fixture against Hungary in Paderborn. Every player had at least half an hour of playing time and only European Championship winner Waldemar Anton played the full game.

Jonathan Tah led out the side in the first half but, in the second half, Timo Baumgartl who became captain and it was the first time wearing the armband for both players. Stefan Kuntz’s DFB U21s side were defeated 2-1 courtesy of two unbelievable strikes from Hungary. Johannes Eggestein netted for Germany and it was the 700th goal in Germany U21 history.

“We’re still lacking a bit of chemistry as the lads haven’t played together before,” explained Stefan Kuntz. “But we were too frantic and made too many sloppy passes. We have to make tzhe right decisions on Tuesday. Tuesday will be the U21s’ European Championships qualification tie against Kosovo and it’ll be the first ever match for a Germany national side to play against Kosovo.

“Our performance in the Hungary game wasn’t good enough but we have to get it over it quickly,” said Florian Neuhaus. The midfielder came on in the second half for his U21 debut. “It was a very special feeling and I felt I got straight into the flow of the game.”

Germany are aware of the threat Kosovo possess. “We ‘re at home and want to show the fans that we can win the game.” Head Ccoach Kuntz added: “We’ll stay patient. This has been a tough challenge but all the lads are capable of coming through it. We ‘ve had a bad game but we don’t tend to have two in a row.”
