Neuer on being a Ballon d’Or finalist: “It makes me proud”

World Champion Manuel Neuer (28) is very relaxed about the announcement of the Ballon d’Or winner on 12th January. The Bayern München goalkeeper is one of the three finalists alongside current title-holder Cristiano Ronaldo and four-time winner Lionel Messi. “It’s a great feeling and that’s just about even being among the finalists,” Neuer told the Bild newspaper. “I’m delighted to be one of the three. It’s very special as a goalkeeper. To achieve that makes me incredibly proud.”

The two best attacking players of the last decade have a slight advantage, in spite of Neuer’s World Champion status, explained the keeper with a smile: “They’ve scored more goals than me.” According to Neuer, “both fully deserve to be among the finalists because they are the go-to guys for their respective countries. Every team tries to take them out of the game, but that doesn’t usually work.”

The triumph in Brazil will remain “the most important thing of all” for the former Schalke man though: “It is a team title and you can enjoy it with others.”
