Neid names 23 players in Algarve Cup squad

Germany head coach Silvia Neid revealed the 23 players that will be travelling to the Algarve Cup between 4th and 11th March. Celia Sasic is due to win her 100th cap for Germany during the tournament. The 1. FFC Frankfurt forward played her first international fixture around ten years ago, on 28th January 2005 against Australia.

“This is a really special occasion for any player and it shows how important Celia is for our team. She’s a true leader on and off the pitch,” commented Neid. Josephine Henning is ready to rejoin the team after recovering from a thigh injury that forced for to sit out the training camp in Marbella.

Germany have been drawn into a group with Sweden (4th March, 17:00 CET), China (6th March, 14:00 CET) and Brasil (9th March, 18:30 CET). The play-offs are scheduled for 11th March. Among the participants are many top teams that have also qualified for the World Cup, such as the United States, Norway, Japan, France and Switzerland.

“The Algarve Cup gives us the opportunity to play high-profile games, meaning it’s crucial to our World Cup preparations. We’ll use this tournament as an opportunity to work hard,” said Neid.

The World Cup takes place in Canada between 6th June and 5th July. Germany open on 7th June (22:00 CET) against Côte d’Ivoire in Ottawa, before facing Euro Cup runners-up Norway in the same location at the same time on 11th June. The final group is scheduled for the 15th June (22:00 CET) against Thailand in Winnipeg.
