National team: Schweinsteiger and Podolski go to Portugal

German team manager Rudi Völler announced his squad for the EURO 2004 in Portugal on Wednesday after the friendly against Switzerland. Völler confirmed in Basel that 1. FC Köln striker Lukas Podolski and Bayern München midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger would be the final two faces in his squad.

Schweinsteiger, 19, replaces injured VfL Bochum star Paul Freier while Podolski, 18, is handed a spot as Völler looks to spice up his goal-shy front-line.

Under-21 international Schweinsteiger forced his way into the Bayern first team this season, leaving the experienced Jens Jeremies out in the cold, and played against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Podolski suffered relegation from the Bundesliga with Köln but a recent hot streak in front of goal, including a spectacular strike against Bayern, put him in the frame.
