National team player Nowotny ends his career

National team player Jens Nowotny has ended his career with immediate effect. "To be injured yet again was decisive. It isn`t the baddest injury I ever had, but the thought of having to wait again for up to ten months with all the rehab and the rebuilding was too much", Nowotny said.

The former pro of Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen had closed his contract with Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb due to a repeated injury on his knee. The 33-year-old suffered torn cruciate ligaments in his knee four times, twice in each knee.

Nowotny informed National coach Joachim Löw about his decision Monday morning. "I'm sorry for him. He had so many injuries over the last years, you almost had to anticipate this decision. Health is the most important thing", Löw said.

Nowotny was capped 48 times (1 goal) and played 334 Bundesliga matches (11 goals). His last international game was in August 2006 against Sweden (3-0). His "career high" (Nowotny) was the World Cup 2006 in Germany, where he played the match for third place against Portugal. He formerly had missed the World Cup 2002 in Korea and Japan due to a knee injury. [db]
