Mustafi into cup semis with Valencia

Shkodran Mustafi was in the starting XI as FC Valencia progressed into the semi final of the Spanish Copa del Rey. Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg against league opponents Las Palmas, the seven-time cup winners edged the second leg 1-0 thanks to a Rodrigo goal (20’).

Europa League winners Sevilla FC also progressed after beating second division side CD Mirandés 3-0 on Thursday, having won 2-0 in the first leg. On Wednesday night, Marc-André ter Stegen and Champions League winners FC Barcelona booked their spot in the semis, beating Athletic Bilbao 5-2 on aggregate, while Celta Vigo provided the shock of the round, beating Atlético 3-2 in the second leg. The first leg had ended 0-0.

Besiktas into round of 16 without Gomez

Besiktas moved into the last sixteen of the Turkish Cup, despite losing 4-3 at home to third-division side Sivas Belediyespor. The Istanbul side, who were without Germany international Mario Gomez, went behind to an Ali Akburc penalty, with Alexander Milosevic seeing red for the foul.

After the break, Seyid Ahmet Han doubled the lead for the underdogs, before the hosts came back brilliantly with goals from Cenk Tosun (54’, 60’) and Gökhan Töre. Atilla Yildirims late brace (79’, 82’) turned the game once more in favour of the visitors.
