Müller’s brace banishes Hamburg’s relegation worries

A brace from Nicolai Müller saw Hamburg take a big step away from relegation danger, as they claimed a 2-0 victory over Hertha BSC. Mainz 05 were not able to build on their display in the 2-1 win at FC Bayern, being held to a 0-0 home draw by SV Darmstadt 98.

46,136 spectators in Hamburg witnessed the home-side get off to a solid start, as HSV controlled the action but often lacked accuracy in their final passes which prevented them from creating clear chances. The best opportunity in the first half came when Gotoku Sakai fine solo-effort produced a good save from Hertha keeper Rune Jarstein after 44 minutes.

Hertha didn’t look to invest heavily into their attacking efforts and Hamburg increased the pressure after the break. Consequently, they took a deserved lead with Müller finding the target from the edge of the area after 58 minutes. Hertha looked for a comeback and started to create chances for the equaliser, but Müller’s second goal decided the game and gave Hamburg a seven-point cushion to the relegation zone.

Mainz miss out on opportunity to go 4th

Mainz and Darmstadt produced a hard-fought game with Mainz struggling to dominate each other. The visitors looked very comfortably defensively but still allowed Mainz to several chances in the first half, which were all left unconverted.

Four days after their surprise win in Munich, Mainz looked to increase the pressure in the second half. Jhon Córdoba, who had scored a goal in each of his previous three appearances, missed a decent opportunity ten minutes into after the break. Two minutes later Mainz were reduced to ten men, as Donati was sent off following an unsportsmanlike behaviour towards Darmstadt’s Sandro Wagner. The closing stages of the game were dramatic, which chances at both ends but ultimately the game was played out in a goalless draw.
