Müller and Popp fire Wolfsburg to second DFB Cup title

Second time in the final, second victory: VfL Wolfsburg beat 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 3-0 to record their second DFB Cup title. Martina Müller, who is retiring at the end of the season, bagged VfL’s first two goals before Alexandra Popp got her name on the scoresheet. Wolfsburg previously beat Potsdam in the 2013 final. Potsdam have been victorious in the DFB Cup on three occasions but have lost now lost in their last four appearances in the final.

"It’s obviously terrific. We lost in the Champions League last week but today we were fully focussed. We’ll enjoy the moment but then tomorrow focus switches back to the Bundesliga,” remarked match winner Müller. Potsdam’s Tabea Kemme was understandably disappointed after the match. "We had our chances but weren’t as clinical as Wolfsburg," she reflected.

Wolfsburg make the better start to the game

In front of 19,204 fans, including DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach, Vice President of Women's and Girls’ Football Hannelore Ratzeburg and Germany manager Silvia Neid, it was a cagey opening ten minutes at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne. Wolfsburg then sprung to life and took the lead in the 13th minute. Potsdam‘s Johanna Elsig misjudged Nilla Fischer’s long ball forward, leaving Müller to round goalkeeper Anna Felicitas Sarholz and slot the ball into the empty net.

Potsdam were visibly shocked by falling behind so early on and had Sarholz to thank for the fact that they didn’t go into the break 2-0 down. A mistake from Jennifer Zietz gave Caroline Hansen a free run at goal, but Sarholz was equal to her effort.

Potsdam get more of a foothold in the game

The fourth-placed side came more into the game after half an hour. Tabea Kemme tested Almuth Schult in the Wolfsburg goal for the first time in the 35th minute with a powerful free kick from 40 metres. Moments later, Lidija Kulis was put off her stride at the last second and fired into the side netting.

The side from Lower Saxony were once again quick off the mark in the second half. Sarholz firstly denied Verena Faißt in a one-on-one situation, before saving from Hansen just eight minutes later.

There was nothing the Turbine keeper could do in the 61st minute though. Nina Pedersen fouled Alexandra Popp in the area and Müller made no mistake from the spot with a well-placed penalty. Müller then turned provider for Popp in the 71st minute. The latter latched onto Müller’s pass before rifling home from a tight angle to make it 3-0 and put the game to bed.
