Morlautern: Are Greuther Fürth just a minor obstacle?

SV Morlautern have only been progressing as a club in recent years. They were plying their trade in the eighth division of German football in 2009 but since then they have been celebrating promotion year after year.

Their rapid rise through the leagues to the fifth division has left them somewhat disappointed to ‘only’ be facing 2. Bundesliga side Greuther Fürth in the first round of this season’s DFB Pokal. Borussia Dortmund, Bayern München or local rivals 1. FC Kaiserslautern were top choice on their list. “Of course we are pleased but everyone will understand that this is not our dream draw,” admitted the club on its Facebook page.

SVM are now setting their sights on a place in the second round and will certainly not be lacking in confidence. Board member Heinz Pörtner insisted the players are all fit. “We believe in our team, we believe in our coach. We are preparing hard for this. We do not want to leave the pitch as the losing team.”

Cup money: “A blessing for our small club”

Fans will be hoping for another giant-killing when the two sides meet on Sunday, 13th August. Fürth however are approaching this tie just like any other. “We will be preparing for this game very seriously,” stressed sporting director Ramazan Yildrim.

Morlautern can already be sure of a six-figure prize sum whatever the result. “It is a blessing for our small club,” said board member Reiner Engbarth. “We will likely spend most of that investing in the club’s infrastructure in order to consistently achieve, especially for the youth teams. We are hoping to be able to benefit from this in the future.”
