Mo Dahoud: The relaxed newcomer

Mahmoud Dahoud is loved by everyone who comes across him in the U20s set-up. He’s easy-going and laid-back both on and off the pitch. Whether having a quick chat with the hotel staff in Ascona or sharing a joke with his teammates, the 20-year-old has an infectious personality.

Mahmoud Dahoud, called "Mo" by his teammates, is living his dream. "It was always my aim to become a professional footballer. I am enjoying every minute," says the 20-year-old. Former Gladbach manager Lucien Favre previously praised him as a "huge talent." He made his breakthrough under André Schubert though and since the former Germany U15s manager took over the reins at Borussia Mönchengladbach, Dahoud has been in the Borussia starting XI.

Dahoud "pleased" with his first season

32 games, five goals and nine assists in 2015/16 – impressive statistics for a young player, especially when you add in the ground he’s covered and passes completed. How does Dahoud rate his first season though? "I am pleased with my performance. Nevertheless, I hope that I can improve next year," said Dahoud.

The Gladbach player is still working on increasing his physical toughness and strength. He’s therefore completing additional sessions in the weight room. "I’ve already gained four kilos of muscle mass," declares the Borussia player proudly. The Syrian-born star feels comfortable at the U20s training camp, especially when out on the pitch. Once the ball is rolling, he’s in his element. Running, offering an option, passing – the 20-year-old is constantly on the move and always wants to receive the ball. "Mo is very good on the ball and is always looking forward. He always looks confident and in control," comments U20s manager Frank Wormuth.

"Playing for the national team is the ultimate goal for every player"

Dahoud’s instinct on the pitch gives him an edge. He constantly has an eye on the ball and can anticipate passes and situations. These are the individual strengths that have already marked him out for great things in the future. "Playing for the national team is the ultimate goal for every player. I’ll give everything to someday reach that level," promises Dahoud.

Before that happens though, the U20s face die Mannschaft in a friendly. In spatial terms, Mo Dahoud is very close to the national team. "It is a real honour for us all to train with the national team and help them prepare for the tournament," comments Dahoud. However, there are no signs of nerves. "I’m going to try to pick up some tips," says the midfielder with a laugh as he also greets a passer-by. His calm and laid-back personality truly is infectious.
