Mittag scores brace in 4-2 win over Austria

Anja Mittag scored twice in the first and goals by Verena Faißt and Lena Petermann after the break ensured Germany’s victory. The 9,459 spectators in Regensburg were presented with an emotional highlight even before the game kicked off: DFB President Reinhard Grindel and Vice President Hannelore Ratzeburg thanked former Germany national team coach Silvia Neid and her assistant coaches Ulrike Ballweg and manager Doris Fitschen, who had ended their commitment’s after the Olympic gold medal success in Rio this summer. Long-term internationals Saskia Bartusiak, Melanie Behringer and Annike Krahn were also given a farewell.

The start to the second half did not go as planned for the DFB Team, as Austria were level inside just eight minutes after the break thanks to goals from Laura Feiersinger and Nina Burger. But the hosts eventually recovered and regained control of the game. Verena Faißt scored a real stunner midway through the second half and Lena Petermann restored the two goal lead from the spot, after Alexandra Popp had been brought down in the area.
