Mertesacker wins with 10-man Arsenal

Arsenal secured a home victory against Queens Park Rangers on matchday 18 in the English Premier League. The traditional Boxing Day fixtures saw the Gunners win 2-1 with World Champion Per Mertesacker in the starting line-up. Chelsea also tightened their grip on first place earlier on Friday. José Mourinho’s side beat West Ham United 2-0 in a London derby after a brilliant performance.

Arsenal, captained by Mertesacker, went into a 2-0 lead against QPR courtesy of goals from Alexis Sanchez and Tomas Rosicky. The second goal came after the North London club had been reduced to ten men, with Oliver Giroud sent off for a headbutt. Rangers got one back through Charlie Austin’s 80th-minute penalty, but it was too little, too late. Germany international Lukas Podolski didn’t feature as the Gunners recorded a 600th win under Arsène Wenger to maintain sixth place.

No room for Schürrle in Chelsea victory

Meanwhile, goals from John Terry and Diego Costa led Champions League last-16 participants Chelsea to a much deserved victory, ensuring they remain three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League. World Cup winner André Schürrle only watched on from the bench though.
