Marozsán Germany women’s new captain

Dzsenifer Marozsán is the new captain of the Germany women’s national team. Head coach Steffi Jones announced the decision at the press conference in Regensburg ahead of her home debut on Saturday against Austria. Marozsan’s predecessor Saskia Bartusiak resigned from international football after their Olympic gold medal in Rio.

The 24-year-old Olympique Lyon midfielder made her international debut in October 2010 and has made 66 appearances for her country, scoring 30 goals. Along with the Olympic victory in Rio 2016, Marozsán also celebrated Germany’s triumph at the European Championships in Sweden in 2013 and lifted the U20s World Cup trophy in 2010. At club level she won the Champions League in 2015 with former club 1. FFC Frankfurt, as well as winning the DFB Cup twice in 2011 and 2014. She made the move to French champions Lyon after the Olympic Games in the summer.

Debut against Austria

The midfielder will take to the field for the first time as Germany captain in the two warm-up fixtures against Austria in Regensburg and the Netherlands in Aalen. “It is a huge honour for me. I’m really proud that Steffi Jones chose me. I am more than aware of the responsibility that is required for this role and I think this shows how much faith the coach has in me. I want to justify that trust, on and off the pitch.”

For Marozsán, the team’s success is more important than anything else. That is exactly what her teammates like about her and there is absolutely no doubt when it comes to her footballing ability. She is dangerous in front of goal, her vision is fantastic, she has a brilliant tactical understanding of the game and she is regarded as one of the best players in the world. The spotlight will now be on Marozsán more than ever before. “I know that the focus is always on the captain but for me the team is the priority and that is how I view my duty. I see myself as a team player and always want to involve everyone but also to lead the way and take responsibility.”

Match-winner in Rio

It was an easy decision for Steffi Jones to choose Marozsán as the next captain. Jones was full of praise for Marozsán, claiming that “for me, she is the perfect captain. Everyone in the team respects what she has to say, she has a very good reputation, expresses herself clearly and gets to the point. She is a true team player and has a lot of leadership qualities. Moreover, Dzseni has an outstanding knowledge of the game and has great people skills. She is the right person to have as a link between myself and the team and will be an excellent representative of the team off the pitch.” Jones went on to add, “The captain must not only be the most vocal but also have personality and a big presence. Dzseni has that.”

Marozsán showed how important she is for the team at the Olympics in Rio. She put her side on the road to winning gold with her opening goal in the final against Sweden, curling a wonderful strike into the corner. She also provided the assist for the second goal of the match, which finished 2-1 to the Germans. It was a massive performance from Marozsán.
