Manchester United win the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup

Manchester United won the 25th Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup. The indoor tournament for U19 teams was held at the Glaspalast Sindelfingen and saw United beat VfB Stuttgart 3-2 on penalties; defending champions Schalke 04 came third.

Stuttgart had Germany U19 goalkeeper Marius Funk to thank, as his stunning performance helped take the game to penalties. In the shootout Marvin Jäger and Max Besuschkow scored for VfB and although Funk also kept out penalties Charlie Scott, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Marcus Rashford converted to give United the win. Their midfielder Joe Riley was named Player of the Tournament.

Lohmar fires Schalke to third

Schalke played Grasshopper Zürich in the third place play-off, having won each of the previous two tournaments. A hat-trick from Hendrik Lohmar (3’/13’/16’) was followed by a 17th minute consolation goal from Valon Fazlius for the Swiss side. Schalke won the game 3-1.

Borussia Mönchengladbach, who started the tournament with three wins, finished sixth after a 6-2 loss to 1899 Hoffenheim in the 5th place play-off. The 7th place play-off saw Fenerbahce beat Celtic 6-5 on penalties. The tournament for Merecedes workers saw Sindelfingen beat Mannheim 2-1 in the Final.
