Mainz face bogey side Fürth

Martin Schmidt’s 1. FSV Mainz 05 started the season strongly, impressing in both the Bundesliga and Europa League, but were brought back to earth with a bump last weekend due to their 3-0 defeat vs. Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen. Despite this setback, they enter Wednesday’s DFB Cup tie (18:30 CEST) against second-tier outfit SpVgg Greuther Fürth as favourites.

The Mainz boss commented that “we weren’t as fresh and willing as we needed to be against Schalke.” He went on to add that “Wednesday’s Cup tie gives us chance to make amends. We’re working hard and are keeping our heads held high.”

The head-to-head record shines brighter for Fürth going into the clash, though. They have won eight of the last 10 clashes. It’s also worth noting that Mainz have lost four of their last five Cup ties against second-division teams as a Bundesliga side.
