Lovely football but no goals: Bayern protect lead over BVB

League leaders FC Bayern München protected their five-point gap over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday night, drawing 0-0 in Dortmund.

81,359 spectators made the journey to the Signal Iduna Park, and enjoyed a game played at high tempo. Thomas Müller had the biggest chance of the game five minutes in, failing to capitalize on an error from BVBkeeper Roman Bürki.

Chances at both ends

Bayern controlled possession, but BVB were extremely dangerous on the break - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang outrunning Joshua Kimmich early on, but failing to beat Manuel Neuer from close range. The match was intensive, and played at a high level , both technically and tactically. Kimmich stopped what looked like a certain goal in the 27th minute, nipping in front of Marco Reus as he was about to pull the trigger. At the other end, Douglas Costa couldn’t beat Bürki when played through one on one.

Bayern put in a dominant performance despite their surprise loss against Mainz in the week. Dortmund battled hard, limiting Bayern to few clear-cut chances. In the second half, Aubameyang again couldn’t find a way past Neuer, highlighting their constant attacking threat.

Vidal hits the crossbar

Bayern went even closer, Vidal’s shot from a corner crashing against the underside of the crossbar after a slight touch from Bürki. In the latter stages, the game slowed down somewhat with both teams limiting the other to few chances of note. Substitute Adrian Ramos had the best chance of the second half late on, putting his header wide of the far post.
