Löw: “You can’t ask for a better end to the year than that”

The World Champions beat the European Champions. Germany secured a 1-0 win over Spain in a prestigious friendly to round off their World Cup winning year in style. Manager Joachim Löw was very happy with his injury-hit side’s performance. DFB.de has rounded up the match reaction from the Germany camp.

Manager Joachim Löw: I don’t think you can ask for a better end to the year than that. I’m very happy with our defensive display. We were better going forward in the second half than we were in the first. We have to keep on developing and improving in areas, but that was a good start today. In regards to Philipp Lahm [who broke his ankle earlier today], I was quite shocked. I feel very sorry for Philipp and wish him a speedy recovery.

Toni Kroos: These two recent wins are just what we'd hoped for. We were very solid at the back and hardly let anything through. It's been a great year and it's a great way to end it.

Sami Khedira: The players that were out there on the pitch were superb. We were very solid in the first half and did more going forward after the break. It’s not an undeserved victory.

Shkodran Mustafi: Huge compliments to the team, who I don’t think have played as collectively as that before. We showed today that we’re capable of playing in a different kind of system as well.

Thomas Müller: It was a good result, one the team deserves. We showed that we’re to be reckoned with. We had a lot of young players involved who were excellent today. In terms of my injury, we’ll see what the examination brings tomorrow. Philipp’s injury was a shock, but you can’t turn back time in football; you have to make the best of what you’re given.

DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach: Given our personnel situation, we weren’t necessarily expecting to beat the European Champions away from home. It’s even nicer that we’ve done it at the end of this World Cup winning year.
