Löw: “We won - that’s what counts”

Thanks to a very early goal from Timo Werner and a thumping header from Mats Hummels, the German national team won 2-1 against an impressive Czech Republic team. It was their seventh win in as many games. DFB.de has the reaction to the game here.

Joachim Löw: “I’m not at all satisfied with the way which we played tonight. We won, and that’s what counts, but we benefited from a lot of luck. It felt like we had a lot of possession but just couldn’t break through their lines. We didn’t create anything for the whole game and deserved a draw. We made things difficult for ourselves. I really wanted to bring lots of attackers on to the pitch. With six of them it meant we could make use of the space, but it also meant we were lacking defensively. We coughed the ball up far too much.”

Thomas Müller: “We made far too many mistakes tonight. The Czechs played with their backs to the wall, but we gave the ball away too easily in our build-up play.”

Mats Hummels: “We had a lot of problems, but the biggest was that we gave the ball away too easily. We weren’t patient enough, we tried to force things, and we gave them too much space. I can’t think of a German side that did that more than we did tonight. That’s not the football that we know we can play. However, it was still very important that we won.”

Timo Werner: “I was obviously really happy about my goal, and it was a great start for us. We expected that the Czechs would throw everything at us, because it was their last chance at World Cup qualification. All in all though, it was the final pass that was missing for us.”
