Löw: „Effort deserved the win“

The German national team defeated Poland 2-0 and takes the lead in the Group B standings. “Because of the effort, the team deserved the win”, said German coach Joachim Löw.

Germany’s coach Joachim Löw: “Obviously you want to start the tournament with a win, which gives you something to build on. Because of the effort, the team deserved the win. We all witnessed two great goals by Lukas Podolski, who had a good game. As did our entire team. We had some good combinations. End of first half was our downtime, we showed some deficits in ballhandling during that phase. But overall, the team did quite well.”

Michael Ballack: “I think we all were pretty focused and did not make many mistakes. Too bad, that we did not capitalise on all our chances. There was a phase, when Poland had too much ball possession time, but we were able to get to regain control. We deserved to win. Croatia on Thursday could already be a decisive game.”

Lukas Podolski: “We played a good game and we stuck to the game-plan. But we should not rest on our laurels. This is only one step on a long road. We have a few quiet days ahead, which will give us an opportunity to rest.”

Poland’s coach Leo Beenhakker: “I felt that we played them tough for most of the game. Just a few inches made all the difference when they scored their first goal. You can guess that my players are disappointed right now, because we really had the chance to leave the field with a tie. My team is mentally very solid. If Germany defeats Croatia, we still controll our own destiny.”
