Lewandowski hat-trick as Bayern ease through

FC Bayern München are safely through to the second round of the DFB Cup as their title defence got off to a flying start, not least thanks to a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick. The record German champions were 5-0 winners against Regionalliga side Carl Zeiss Jena and, earning Carlo Ancelotti a second victory is as many competitive games in charge and seeing the Munich club take their first step towards a 19th DFB Cup triumph.

A scintillating Lewandowski had the result more or less wrapped up at half time, scoring in the third, 34th and 43rd minute to bag his second hat-trick in the DFB Cup. Bayern were commanding throughout the 90 minutes, and there were no signs of hosts Jena causing the kind of upset they did in the first round last season, when they sensationally knocked out Hamburger SV. FCB added two further goals in the second half, as Lewandowski turned provider to set up Arturo Vidal, before Mats Hummels netted his first goal for the Reds, heading in Joshua Kimmich’s corner.

Bayern will find out their second-round opponents on 26th August, with the draw set to be made after their 2016/17 Bundesliga opener against Werder Bremen.
