Leverkusen stun holders Bayern to move into Cup semis

Bayer Leverkusen scored a dramatic 4-2 win over holders Bayern Munich to move into the German Cup semi-finals on Wednesday. Leverkusen raced into a 3-0 lead, scoring all three goals in 16 frantic second-half minutes before Bayern netted twice in two minutes to set up an electrifying finale.

Tranquillo Barnetta's thundering drive from 20 metres gave the hosts the lead before Arturo Vidal and Patrick Helmes increased the scoreline to 3-0. Bayern fought back with one from Lucio and Miroslav Klose's close-range header two minutes later but as they poured forward they conceded a fourth goal through Stefan Kiessling deep in stoppage time.

Brazilian playmaker Diego scored twice, including a second half penalty, to steer Werder Bremen into the German Cup semi-finals with a 5-2 win away to VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday. Hamburg beat second division Wehen Wiesbaden 2-1 in their quarter-final with a goal from Mladen Petric and an own goal of Marko Kopilas.

Schalke 04's disappointing season continued on Tuesday as they were knocked out of the German Cup 1-0 by Second Division Mainz in their quarter-final clash.

An 88th minute goal by Burkina Faso's Aristide Bance was enough to end four-time Cup winners Schalke's interest in the competition and send Mainz - who are second in their division - into the semi-finals for the first time in their history. The other three scheduled games take place on Wednesday.

In a much-anticipated game, Bayer Leverkusen host FC Bayern München on Wednesday (8.30 P.M., live on Premiere and ZDF). Leverkusen moved the game to Düsseldorf, where a capacity-crowd of 50,500 fans will watch the game, as their own arena in Leverkusen is currently being renovated. Bayern are record Cup-Champions – they have won 15 times, four times in the last six years.

The game on Tuesday:

FSV Mainz 05 - FC Schalke 04 1-0 (0-0)

The games on Wednesday:

VfL Wolfsburg - Werder Bremen 2-5 (2-2)
Hamburger SV - SV Wehen Wiesbaden 2-1 (2-0)
Bayer Leverkusen - Bayern München 4-2 (0-0)
