Leroy Sané bags brace in City rout

Leroy Sané got the better of his Die Mannschaft teammate Emre Can in Manchester City’s 5-0 thrashing of Liverpool in the Premier League. The pacey winger came off the bench in the second half, but still finished the game with two goals to his name. It was the biggest defeat for Jürgen Klopp since he took over at Liverpool in October 2015.

The game was overshadowed, however, by an unfortunate incident in the first half, when Liverpool forward Sadio Mané unintentionally caught City keeper Ederson in the face with an outstretched boot in attempt to draw the sides level. Ederson was knocked out by the blow and treated for several minutes before being substituted, while Mané was quickly dismissed with a red card.

Man City, who now have ten points from their opening four matches, extended their unbeaten run in the league to eleven games in the Premier League, and 24 at home. The result leaves Liverpool on seven points.

Sergio Agüero opened the scoring in the 25th minute, making him the Premier League’s highest-scoring non-European, before Gabriel Jesus bagged a goal either side of half time. Germany international Sané came off the bench in the 56th minute and scored twice to complete the victory.

Meanwhile, World champions Mesut Özil and Shkodran Mustafi helped Arsenal reverse their run of bad form. Three early goals ensured that 1. FC Köln’s Europa League opponents would come out on top against Bournemouth 3-0. Also, reigning champions Chelsea and Antonio Rüdiger beat Leicester City 2-1.

Kroos and Real drop points at home

World Cup winner Toni Kroos made his 100th LaLiga appearance with Real Madrid, but it wasn’t a day to celebrate, as the Champions League holders were held to a 1-1 draw against UD Levante. Kroos becomes the fifth German to reach this landmark Real, following Uli Stielike, Bernd Schuster, Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira.

The guests took the lead in the 12th minute through Ivi, but the hosts, who were without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, levelled in the 36th through Lucas. Madrid’s Marcelo saw red in the dying minutes of the match. The result leaves both sides on five points.

Real were forced to substitute French striker Karim Benzema in the 28th minute due to injury, bringing on Welsh star Gareth Bale to replace him.
