Leonie Maier wins Goal of the Month

Amidst fierce competition, a delighted Leonie Maier won June's Goal of the Month. In the long-running poll conducted by ARD's Sportschau programme, the German international received almost 40 percent of votes for her goal in the 4-2 win against Japan shortly before the start of the UEFA Women's European Championship.

"I'm so happy to have won this, it's a great honour. Thanks to everyone who voted for me", said Maier, who was presented with her reward by Germany’s women’s national coach Silvia Neid.

The 20-year-old was in esteemed company in this month's poll. Max Kruse, Neymar, Andrea Pirlo and Martin Harnik were the scorers of the other four goals up for consideration, but it was Maier who came out on top, giving her an extra boost for the latter stages of EURO 2013.
