Learning from Manuel Neuer

30 children had their dreams made true on Tuesday when they spent a day being coached by Manuel Neuer before having a chance to chat with the World Cup winner. The event was made possible thanks to Allianz, who are one of the DFB’s partners.

The children took part in dribbling and shooting drills under the watchful eye of Manuel Neuer, FC Bayern goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic as well as Germany international Melanie Leupolz. The trio watched on and offered advice to the participants. “My career won’t go on forever and I don’t know what I’m going to do next yet. But I think I’d like to pass on my knowledge to the future generation,” explained Neuer.

After the session was over, everyone took part in a Q and A session hosted by Katharina Kleinfeldt. Neuer described the event as one of the hardest press conferences of his career, as the youngsters were determined to find out everything about their hero. At one point he was asked about whether he would consider leaving Bayern: “I have a contract with them and am a man of my word.” Others wanted to establish whether he was good at school or not. “I studied French for a year but wouldn’t learn the vocabulary. The teacher didn’t let me continue.”

Manuel Neuer was fully aware that he was a role model for the kids and explained to them that “if you’re not willing to learn, you will not be successful, in whatever field you choose to pursue.” The watching parents were grateful for what he told the children, but also that he took time out to put on such an event.
