Large proportion of the population in favour of Germany hosting EURO 2024

87% of German citizens who are interested in football and over 18 years of age have voted in favour of UEFA EURO 2024 being staged in Germany. That was the outcome of a questionnaire run by research institute Forsa. Overall, 69% of the population supported the DFB’s application to host the European Championships.

“They’re really good numbers,” DFB honorary team captain and representative of the bid Philipp Lahm said. “They show that football is the cause of so many emotions. That’s the same for me- Football is community, excitement and hospitality. Many people still have fond memories of the 2006 World Cup. So we want to continue to work hard so that we can bring the tournament to Germany.”

Around 15% of those asked voted against the Euros being held in Germany. More than a third of such people gave the high costs of holding sporting events as their reason for being against the bid. DFB general secretary Dr. Friedrich Curtius said, “We are taking these reservations seriously even though they may not be factually accurate. We would not need to build any new stadia for EURO 2024 so we have a functioning infrastructure to build on. Therefore the costs in comparison to other big sporting events will be much lower.
