'Lap of Honour' - World Cup to tour Germany

The message is unmistakable. ‘We are ALL World Champions’ – read the massive letters on boards around the pitch in the first international match following our fourth World Cup win. Those were the sentiments of what DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach, General Secretary Helmut Sandrock or National team general manager Oliver Bierhoff stated in interviews in the weeks following that magical night in Rio. The World Cup title, it unites everybody and belongs to the whole of Germany.

Sound good? It’s good then that the DFB will back up their words with action. Even next year. The World Cup trophy, the so-called ‘Winners Trophy’ will embark upon a spectacular journey. To the football clubs, where the national side and their fourth star came from and to some of the roughly 26,000 amateur clubs in Germany.

“We’ll send the cup through the country with a big truck in order to give something back to our roots: They provided the foundation for success,” Wolfgang Niersbach announced in Frankfurt today, initiator of the so-called lap of honour. “It’s always unbelievably emotional to see, which special attraction the Jules Rimet trophy exerts on all footballers and fans.”

Niersbach: "Another thank you to grass roots”

Therefore also, said the DFB President, it’s only natural that the DFB sends a further big thank you following the fourth World Cup trophy back to the foundation, where the World Champions began kicking a ball about. “We are very thankful to FIFA, that they have approved our mutual ideas in regard to our massive planned amateur football campaign.”

Of course this is not simply a commercial right to market the trophy on a tour to our partners around the world. Rather the World Footballing Body in Zürich gave the all-clear as DFB pursues even its small economic interests, and wants to thank volunteers for their efforts as it’s presented to over 60 clubs and football circles.

All information regarding the details of the lap of honour will be announced in the new year on dfb.de/en. One thing for sure: The encounter with the World Cup trophy will be pretty special for every individual who visits each event and will give them unforgettable goosebumps. As it were everyone’s personal 113th minute in that final in Rio…
