Kuntz: "Hrubesch set the foundations for qualification"

The DFB-Team have reached next summer’s U21 European Championship in spectacular style. They’ve won all nine of their qualifiers, scoring 31 times and conceding just seven goals in the process. The latest victory came against Russia on Friday night (4-3) thanks to goals from Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Maximilian Arnold (2).

Despite this excellent run of form, the side aren’t resting on their laurels. After all, victory over Austria in St. Pölten on Tuesday (18:00 CEST) would see Stefan Kuntz’s men reach the tournament on the back of a 100% record in qualifying. “Obviously, it’s great to have already qualified. However, we want to beat Austria in order to lay down a marker,” explained Davie Selke, who scored the third against Russia.

Kuntz: "Now need to find the right balance"

“I’d like to pass my congratulations on to Horst Hrubesch and his team,” remarked Kuntz. “They set the foundations for qualifying. We just finished the job off.” The head coach is now planning to analyse the Russia game closely ahead of the final fixture. “We were excellent offensively, but we now need to find the right balance between attack and defence,” he added, referring to the fact that his side conceded three goals on Friday night.

Captain Maximilian Arnold (VfL Wolfsburg) was delighted to have bagged the opener. “I’m not known for scoring headers,” he stated, before adding “the cross from Mitchell Weiser was perfect, but even then I wasn’t sure whether it would go in.” Qualification gets wrapped up on Tuesday when the DFB-Team face Austria, who are second in the group and have secured a spot in the U21 EURO 2017 play-offs.
